In the last fifty years there has been a renaissance in Aymara culture and the language itself, which today has over one and a half million speakers of its various dialects in the mountain areas of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. In December 2005 an Aymara speaker, Evo Morales, won a landslide electoral victory to become the first indigenous president of Bolivia.
